History of the Hoyo Monterrey Epicure No.2 

The Hoyo de Monterrey brand was established in Cuba in 1865 by José Gener y Batet. The name “Hoyo de Monterrey” translates to “hole of Monterrey,” a reference to the low-lying location of the plantation that Gener acquired.

From its inception, Hoyo de Monterrey quickly gained popularity, particularly in Britain, where it became highly regarded among cigar enthusiasts. By the late 1800s, the Gener company had expanded significantly and emerged as one of Cuba’s largest and most successful cigar factories.

The brand’s commitment to quality and craftsmanship contributed to its reputation, solidifying Hoyo de Monterrey’s place in the cigar industry. Over the years, it has continued to thrive, with the Epicure No. 2 becoming one of its most celebrated offerings, showcasing the enduring legacy of José Gener y Batet and the rich history of the brand.

The Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2 is one of the world’s most popular cigars, and for good reason. The cigar is totally handmade using the very best tobacco leaves in Vuelta Abajo – Cuba’s premier cigar-growing region. 

The construction is flawless and contains a double band, which gives it a very sophisticated appearance. The Hoyo de Monterrey 2 provides a pleasant, smooth smoke and strong tobacco taste that’s not too overpowering, giving it just enough room for the cocoa, dried fruit and cinnamon flavours to shine through.

Even when the leaves are young it has an even combustion – although it’s best left stored in a humidor for a while. The Hoyo de Monterrey 2 is a cigar for seasoned smokers, however, novices are encouraged to give it a try to see just how complex and flavoursome a fine cigar can be.
