Cohiba Maduro 5 Genios Cigar History

Cohiba cigars are the flagship brand of Habanos. It was created in 1966 for Fidel Castro himself and was made at the then top-secret but now world-famous El Laguito factory.

At first, it was only seen outside Cuba as gifts for heads of state and visiting diplomats. Since 1982 Cohiba has been available to the open market with only three sizes in the market, the Panetela, the Corona Especial, and the Lancero.

In 1989 three more vitolas, the Robusto, the Exquisito, and the Cohiba Espléndido, were added; the six are referred to as the Línea Clásica (classic line).

In 1992 Habanos SA launched the first sizes in what it calls the Línea 1492, commemorating Christopher Columbus and his voyage to the Americas, with each size named for a century since Columbus’ discovery. The initial launch included the Cohiba Siglo I, Siglo II, Siglo III, Siglo IV, and Siglo V, with a Siglo VI added in 2002.

Uniquely amongst Habanos two of Cohiba’s filler leaves, the seco and ligero, undergo a third fermentation in barrels, which adds smoothness to the blend. There are two distinct Lineas (lines) of Cohiba: the medium to full-flavoured Linea Clasica introduced between 1966 and 1989; and the medium-flavoured Linea 1492 (Siglo range) brought out in 1992 to mark the 500th Anniversary of Columbus’s epic journey of discovery. Ten years later in 2002 a new size, the Siglo VI was added to Linea 1492.

Cohiba Maduro 5 Genios Cigar Flavour Profile

What makes these cigars so special lies in the number 5. All the wrapper leaves have been cured for 5 years before being hand-rolled into the Cohiba Genios. Contrary to popular belief the dark leaf gives a sweeter not stronger flavour. In fact, the Cohiba brand is unique because it goes through three fermentation periods rather than two like all other Cuban cigar brands.

The Cohiba Maduro 5 Genios flavour journey begins with the signature creamy vanilla notes that Cohiba cigars are known for. This is followed by layers of spice, leather, and rich cocoa. As the Cohiba Maduro ages, it reveals a distinctive eucalyptus undertone, typical of a well-matured smoke. Toward the finish, a subtle hint of ammonia may appear, adding depth to this complex and bold flavour profile.
